Quotes #28: Empathy and Unity

Good day !

Better late than never.

I've got a lot of feedback on the last post ! Thank you ! Looks like the topic of complexities and difficulties is important for everyone. For me it was interesting to see, how we live in our parallel worlds, meeting hardly ever or often, and seemingly, so different. But we happen to have similar situation, difficulties, which we live through. And this unites us, lets us feel the relations between our souls.

These thoughts brought me to a new experience. In a supermarket, where there are hundreds of people, I walked, looked at the face of every passing person and during that second, I saw his or her face, I "caught" his or her feelings....
"he probably feels ashamed of his height" - I thought about a tall guy, bending and pulling his head into his shoulders...
"she probably runs to get her kid fromkindergarden in time" - I thought about a woman with worried face and a small juice in her hand, quickly marching towards the exit...
"she is probably a caring grandmother grumbling at her grandson because he didn't put his hat on" - I thought about an old woman with a "grumbling" wringle on her forehead.
"they're in love" - I thought about a couple, holding hands, looking each other in the eye and noticing nothing around.

People are around us, so different, but in many things - the same as you and me, we're alike, we know, what it means to be worried, late, shy, angry, tired and annoying, be offended and unsure, love and feel joy. And, lookig in the faces of people around me, I understand in amazement, that I probably know, what they feel. And they instantly become closer.

In all people I see myself - none more, and not one a barleycorn less;
And the good or bad I say of myself, I say of them.

Walt Whitman

We are all - humans - with arms and legs, mind and heart, obeying the same universal and relatively simple laws of the Universe, we love, get upset, feel joy, get offended and angry. We live in the same world, in the same socienty, soak up similar knowledge, and because of that we can understand each other. Moreover, we can be com-passionate to each other, meaning sharing the same passion, i.e. feeling, and what is most interesting, is that you don't have to know him well. It is enough to know Yourself and feel Yourself, because we do have the same "system of feelings" ...

It is called empathy, and this is, probably, the basis of the evolution of the human kind.

The great gift of human beings is that we have the power of empathy.
Meryl Streep

Com-passion bring closeness. Have you noticed, how quickly we become close to a person, if we share our feelings with him ? As if we become one, when borders disappear between HIM/HER and ME, when we feel pain, joy, love, just like ours. You're not born with it, you learn compassion and empathy along with your life experience, so don't be afraid to feel,  because only then we can be com-passionate and understand others, and feel closeness.

"Suffering and joy teach us, if we allow them, how to make the leap of empathy, which transports us into the soul and heart of another person. ln those transparent moments we know other people's joys and sorrows, and we care about their concerns as if they were our own." Fritz Williams

One day my son came from school very upset. A note from the teacher in the diary, offence and anger in the eyes, lips are sealed and silent. I asked the usual questions aout his day at school, but he only barked back something indistinct. After some questioning "around the corner" it turned out he made something, that he shouldn't have done, understood it himself, but how to fix it, to feel himself good, he didn't know. Then teacher noticed his flaw, and wrote a note. And NOW fixing the mistake became increasingly difficult. He was wrong, that is true. But I looked at him, and saw myself, 5 years old, and I knew exactly what he feels right now, and how terribly heavy this feeling is, and how useless and even hurtful are these stupid notes and lectures from teacher or a mother. I just told him about my experience, and, what's most important, about my feelings....

«What is happiness? Happiness is when you're understood» A hero of one famous old russian movie

...and that very second the abyss, that seemed to didive us in the beginning of the talk, disappeared, and we became close. He told me everything, thought aloud and found a solution himself. And I know exactly, that he won't do it any more. The only thing I had to do - is to understand and share his feelings. Even simpler - recall, find in myself those very same feelings, put myself into his shoes. And let him know, that he is not alone with this.

"No man is an island."  John Donne (1572-1631)

We're not alone. Although everyone lives his/her life by him/herself, we're never alone. We sometimes dive into ourselves and tell to ourselves, that we live separately from the whole world. But it's not true. And every second of our life we can open our heart and soul windows wide, open up and let ourselves to be one with all people (what people ! the whole world !), feel ourselves as one world, the only world.
"And here comes happiness !" Jevgeni Grishkovec, contemporary russian writer and artist

And then how can you think you cannot acomplish something ?! You ARE everything. :)

"The biggest living organism in the world – is a quaking aspen tree in Colorado. It covers 43 hectares. It looks like every tree is separate, but they all stem from the same root system. When we learn to understand that we're all united, we will understand that it is impossible to hurt another person without hurting ourselves.... "

I wish you feel-full and com-passionate week

Share the joy of colleagues success, purr with your loved one and rampage  with the kid - it helps to recover from the winter blues. Tested on myself. ;)

With love,
   Sveta
I am terribly late with this post, and I also thought of silently skipping it altogether, but then I recalled one of my earlier posts about never giving up, and my latest one (which you will see after this one :) ) about sincerity, and .... I am writing it.
